What 50,000 Trade-In Transactions Reveal

Most golf shops think of trade-in as a convenience perk, something to offer when a member brings it up. The data tells a completely different story. Across more than 50,000 trade-in transactions at 600 partner facilities, one pattern keeps emerging: the members who trade in are your highest-value customers, and the fitting appointment is the moment you can reach them.
At the 2026 Middle Atlantic PGA Teaching Summit, Next Round shared the trends shaping this upgrade cycle: who your trade-in customers actually are, what equipment they’re carrying right now, and why the window to capture that revenue is open today.
Not All Trade-In Customers Are the Same
One of the most important findings from the transaction data is that trade-in customers fall into two very different groups. Understanding which one you’re talking to changes everything about how (and whether) you make the ask.
The Upgrade Customer
This customer plans the upgrade before walking in. They quote from home and arrive knowing what their bag is worth. Seventy percent of their gear is from 2020 or newer, and they use that trade-in credit as a down payment on the next flagship build. They represent the highest revenue per transaction of any customer segment. Members with trade-in credit spend 5× more on hardgoods. They show up at in-person trade-in events. This is the customer worth focusing on.
The Cleanout Customer
This customer isn’t planning to buy. They’re clearing space. Fifty-eight percent of their gear is from before 2008. The credit they earn flows to balls, gloves, and apparel, not hardgoods. There’s no upgrade waiting on the other side.
Forty-seven percent of fitting shops wait for the member to bring up trade-in. That means nearly half of all facilities are leaving the conversation, and the sale, on the table. Teaching pros work with upgrade customers every day. The lesson tee is where that conversation changes.
The Upgrade Window Is Open Right Now
Trade-in volume by equipment release year points to a clear and urgent trend: the 2020–2022 generation sits at the center of the upgrade window. Every major club category follows the same curve: drivers, irons, fairways, and hybrids alike.
2021 is the peak year, confirmed across every major brand. TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping: the brand mix shifts by year, but every brand follows the same upgrade curve. Driver buyers upgrade on a shorter cycle, and head-only traders (component buyers) concentrate heavily in this window and typically return within 18 months.
The implication is straightforward: the members sitting in your fitting chairs right now are statistically likely to be carrying gear that’s ready to trade.
The Models Most Likely in Your Students’ Bags
These are the specific models entering the prime upgrade window. Modern enough to hold meaningful trade-in value, old enough that an upgrade is genuinely compelling.
Brand | Driver in Upgrade Window | Year |
TaylorMade | STEALTH | 2022 |
Callaway | Epic Flash | 2019 |
Ping | G425 MAX | 2021 |
Titleist | TSR2 | 2022 |
PXG | 0811 XF GEN4 | 2021 |
Brand | Iron Set in Upgrade Window | Year |
TaylorMade | STEALTH | 2022 |
Callaway | Mavrik | 2020 |
Ping | G425 | 2021 |
Titleist | 718 AP3 | 2017 |
Mizuno | JPX 921 Hot Metal | 2020 |
Each of these models will fund a meaningful portion of the next build, if you make the ask. A conversation starter that works: “What are you currently gaming? Let me show you what it’s worth toward your next build.”
Iron Sets: Trade-In’s Highest-Leverage Category
If there’s one category to prioritize in the fitting conversation, it’s iron sets. Iron sets make up 14% of the share of trade-in units, but 40% share of total trade-in value.
Custom-fit iron sets cost upwards of $1,500. At that price point, trade-in credit isn’t an incentive. It’s a funding mechanism. Members hold onto irons longer than any other club. When they finally trade, the dollar impact changes the entire purchase decision. Iron sets carry nearly 3× the economic weight of any other category.
A fitter prompt that works: “Your current irons are worth about $X toward your next build. Want to see what that does to the sticker price?”
Your Members Already Expect This
Big box has offered trade-in for years. When a member walks into a Golf Galaxy or a Dick’s, they already know the drill: bring in old gear, get credit, buy something new. The question for your facility isn’t whether your members want trade-in. It’s whether that credit stays with you.
What big box offers is the experience your members compare you against every time: online quote before they visit, credit applied directly to the next purchase.
What most clubs currently offer falls short: one annual trade-in event where members wait all year, value guides that change at drop-off, regrade disputes that erode member trust, and credit that flows to softgoods instead of the next fitting.
What Next Round gives you: members quote from home and arrive ready to buy. Values are locked. No regrading, no disputes. Credit stays in your shop, not with a third party. The pro portal puts a real-time quote in front of any fitting, on demand.
What the Industry Is Telling Us
We conducted a 2026 Benchmark Survey across green grass and fitting facilities nationwide. Here’s what your peers had to say:
44% say trade-ins is primarily member service, not a hardgoods driver
85% are not integrating trade-in into their fitting appointments
56% have no consistent process for initiating the conversation
“The ability to utilize their portal to deliver on-the-spot trade quotes has allowed me to convert more fittings into sales.” Custom Golf of Virginia @ Independence
“The fitting process is so much more these days. Next Round helps our members and our club and are an integral part of the entire sales process.” Brian Camfield, Country Club of Virginia
“I love not having to worry over trade-in value or worry about losing club sales to the big box stores anymore.” Jason Crawley, Briar’s Creek
“Next Round takes care of the details so our shop can focus on providing the best service to members. The trade-in process is seamless and easy to replicate.” Fiddlesticks CC
33% say hardgoods is the goal. 56% have no consistent process to get there. The fitting appointment is where that gap closes.
How It Works: Four Steps
Member quotes from home. Before they walk in, they know what their bag is worth. They arrive ready to buy.
Staff confirms in two minutes. Log into the pro portal, verify the clubs. No back-and-forth, no guesswork.
Drop off at your shop. No mail-backs. Equipment stays local. Credit stays with you, not a third party.
Credit applies to the sale. Sticker shock becomes a closed sale, right there in your shop.
What you get with Next Round: locked-in values with no regrading or disputes, direct deposit upon receipt, a pro portal with saved quotes at your fingertips, marketing materials and shipping labels provided, and credit that stays in your shop.
The Bottom Line
The remaining question isn’t whether your members will trade in. It’s whether they’ll trade in with you.
The 2021 upgrade wave is here. The models are sitting in your members’ bags right now. The conversation starts in the fitting appointment, and Next Round gives you everything you need to have it.
